Golden Visa in Portugal can lead to citizenship

Overview

There is no direct route to citizenship by investment in Portugal. However Portugal adopts an immigrant investor program, known as the Portugal Golden Visa that can ultimately lead to citizenship after six years without the requirement for residency. This program, in operation since 2012, has proven to be very successful for the Portuguese government bringing in over €2billion in investment to the economy.

Details

Applicants and their families can apply for the Golden Visa by investing €500,000 (*or €350,000)  into real estate in Portugal. The process is straightforward. Once granted the applicant and their family members need to renew the residency permit every two years.

Portugal is a member of the European Union and the Schengen visa zone. Citizenship in Portugal and a second passport means EU citizenship and hence the ability to live, work, travel anywhere within the European Union. As a member of the Schengen visa zone holders of the residency card granted with the golden visa are able to travel visa free throughout the Schengen area.

Reduced €350,000 Investment Option

It is possible to obtain the golden visa through a reduced investment of €350,000 into real estate requiring renovation. This is a complex area with a number of pitfalls and we advise clients to contact us first for our specialist advice. Such projects need to be approved by SEF as qualifying for the reduced investment amount and it is critical to ensure the right project and legal advice is obtained before embarking on such investment.
