Spanish Golden Visa can lead to citizenship through residency

Overview

There is no direct citizenship by investment program in Spain. However Spain has an immigrant investor program, known as the Spanish Golden Visa.  This can lead to citizenship in Spain after ten years of residency there. The program was launched by the Spanish government in September 2013.

Details

Applicants and their families can apply for the Golden Visa by investing €500,000 into real estate in Spain. The residency permit takes just 10-15 days and the process is straightforward. If applied for in Spain it is issued for two years and can then be renewed for a further 5 years. If the family is then resident in Spain for a period of 10 years then citizenship can be applied for under the normal rules. As a minimum requirement residency would mean living in the country at least 183 days each year.

Spain is an EU member and also a member of the Schengen visa zone in Europe. Citizenship in Spain and a Spanish second passport means EU citizenship for the holder which grants the ability to live, work, travel anywhere within the European Union. Holders of the residency card are able to travel visa free throughout the Schengen visa zone.
